Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya formerly known as Jabalpur University was established under Jabalpur University Act on the 12th of June 1956. Since then the University has chartered an illustrious history of 50 golden years of academic achievements and intellectual leadership. Situated in the beautiful locale of Sita Pahadi on a sprawling campus of 99.53 acres the University provides a beautiful beauna vista not only physically but futuristically as well. All these achievements of the University were recognized and documented by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council on the 12th of November 2002 when it awarded the University a B ++ rating the highest in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
The University is situated in the tribal heartland of the country and covers seven districts of Madhya Pradesh, Jabalpur, Mandala, Seoni, Balaghat, Narsinghpur, Katni and Dindori. Rani Durgavati Vishwavidhayalaya's catchment area spreads over 46.556 square kilometers covering a population of about 83 Lakhs (2001 censes). Out of this approximately 76% of this population is tribal and socio-economically backward. The literacy rate in the area in hardly 51.6% i.e. below the national average.
The University was established in this extremely backward socio-economic region with the pious intent of spreading the light of education. It was envisaged by the decision maker's that the spread of education especially higher education would lead to deeper socio - economic development. In this regard the University has been playing a pioneering role of a 'change generator'. Through the instrumentality of its various teaching, research and extension activity programmes the University has been initiating and sustaining the process of socio - economic change in the region. There are 130 affilliated colleges of the University that impart higher education to over one lakh students every year.
The University has 23 teaching departments that cover various faculties such as Science, Arts, Social Science , Commerce, Law and Education. The various departments are continuously involved in teaching and research activities that are recognized both nationally and internationally. The University boasts of an Academic Staff College that has received the highest rating in India. The College has been imparting training and refining teaching skills of College/University teachers since 1987.
The University has had the proud privilege of having a host of luminaries from academic and public life as its Vice Chancellors from Pt. Kunjilal Dubey the founder Vice Chancellor of the University who had also been the speaker of Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha to the present Vice Chancellor Professor S.M.Paul Khurana who is an internationally recognized agricultural scientist . Under the benign, dynamic and visionary leadership of the present Vice - Chancellor Prof. S.M.Paul Khurana the University has been charting new heights of academic and intellectual leadership.
